Upon a domain expiry, it goes into Auto Renew GRACE PERIOD; and it will stay in grace period for 30 days. During this grace period you can still renew the domain at a little higher cost.

If you fail to renew it, it goes into DELETION PERIOD (the domain slips into Queued for Deletion) and it will stays in this state for 6 days. During Queued for Deletion period you can still renew the domain at a much higher cost; but if you fail to renew the domain at this period which is now a total of 36 days, the domain finally gets deleted.

Again If you fail to renew this domain after the 36th day that it expired, it enter a hold period known as REDEMPTION GRACE PERIOD; the domain automatically fall into a Pending Restore status, and it will stay in Redemption Grace Period for another 30 days. During the Redemption Grace Period restoration of the domain can occur; you can still renew the domain but at a much higher price. In this phase the price of the domain goes up by 8 to 10 more times than the actual registration amount, depending on the domain extension.

For .COM, .NET and .ORG domain recovering/restoration when they are in Redemption Grace Period (Pending Restore status), the registry requires a $150 USD fee and some other minor process and protocol to be followed.

After Redemption Grace Period; and you still refused to redeem back your domain, it finally flash into PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE state. The domain will be confiscated in this stage for between 5 to 7 days and maybe probably more or up to 30days, as the case may need. In this status, the domain name cannot be Renewed, Redeemed or Recover even if you are paying $1,000,000 (One Million Dollars) and after this period, the domain name would be available for fresh Registration.

Since there is less need for a “Redemption Grace Period” for recently registered names (because they have not been in use for long by the registrant), if your domain has been registered newly; probably for just one year, you may loss the domain if you don’t renew it before it expires because you may not have the grace of having Redemption Grace Period in your domain status, where you need to pay $150 for restoration.

When Auto Renew GRACE PERIOD, DELETION PERIOD (Queued for Deletion), REDEMPTION GRACE PERIOD (Pending Restore status) and PENDING DELETE RESTORABLE phase has been passed, it metamorphoses into public registry state.

In PUBLIC REGISTRY STATE the domain is finally available to the general public for registration; and general availability of the domain can be registered by anyone. Anybody can register it and demand for up to $20,000 (Twenty Thousand Dollars) or more from you.

So in summary, after your domain expiries, it will take approximately or a minimum of 65/72/90 days for it to be available for partial or fresh registration; and if unpredited, it may take up to 180/210 days for fresh registration of the domain.

NOTE:
*Redeeming a domain name is very costly, time consuming and generally a manual process. At the 30 days REDEMPTION GRACE PERIOD (Pending Restore status) after the domain name is deleted, during this period, only the current Domain Registration Company/Registrar of the domain name can Redeem it.

*Names that are in the Delete Pending Period will remain in the registry database, on registry-hold, unavailable for re-registration. All attributes of the Registered Name will remain unmodified. For the .com, .net and, .org TLDs, these attributes consist of creation date, expiration date, nameservers, and sponsoring registrar; for .biz, .info, and .name they also include the name, postal address, e-mail address, voice telephone number, and (where available) fax number of the domain name registrant, and the technical and administrative contacts for each Registered Name. As is currently the case with names in the Delete Pending Period, a status attribute will be added to the Registered Name that prevents the Registrar from modifying or renewing the Registered Name.

*When you have a domain that has Expired or is in Delete Pending Period, there are many things that are not allowed or are no longer possible to be done, among the things are:

RENEW or AUTO-RENEW requests are ignored.

TRANSFER requests are denied (this would change in Stage 2 implementation after possible retoration of the damain).

BULK TRANSFER (Transfer of many domain at a time) operations are allowed within the registrar cycle after renewal/restoration.
